The 2025 Met Gala, held on May 5 at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art, was a celebration of fashion, culture, and identity. With the theme "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," the event honored the rich history and influence of Black dandyism, offering a night where sartorial elegance met cultural homage.

 A Tribute to Black Dandyism

This year's theme drew inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s seminal work, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The accompanying exhibition, set to run from May 10 to October 26, delves into the evolution of Black dandyism from the 18th century to the present day. Organized into 12 sections, it explores facets like Ownership, Presence, Distinction, and Freedom, highlighting how Black individuals have used fashion as a means of self-expression and resistance.

Star-Studded Co-Chairs and Attendees

actor Colman Domingo, Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, musician and designer Pharrell Williams, rapper A$AP Rocky, and fashion icon Anna Wintour, with basketball superstar LeBron James serving as honorary co-chair.

The host committee featured a diverse array of cultural figures, including Simone Biles, Regina King, Spike Lee, Usher, and Janelle Monae, reflecting the event's commitment to celebrating Black creativity and influence in the fashion world.

Shah Rukh Khan's Historic Debut

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan made history as the first Indian male actor to attend the Met Gala. He graced the red carpet in a custom ensemble by Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, blending traditional Indian attire with contemporary flair.
Khan's outfit featured a tailored, floor-length coat made from fine Tasmanian wool, accented with Japanese horn buttons. He paired this with a black silk shirt, tailored trousers, and a satin kamarbandh for added structure. His accessories included layered talismanic chains, a crystal-studded 'K' pendant, a diamond star brooch, multiple rings, and an 18k gold cane adorned with precious stones. The ensemble incorporated Mughal-inspired elements and referenced royal Indian attire, using subtlety and symbolism instead of extravagant detailing.
In an interview with Time, Khan reflected on the significance of his appearance, stating, "Fashion is a language, and tonight, I wanted to speak of heritage, identity, and the timeless elegance that both Indian and Black cultures bring to the world stage."
